Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Group

Do you know a teenager that has difficulty dealing with stress and the emotional ups and downs of living in the 21st century? Maybe you know a youth that could use some skills to set healthy boundaries with friends during a time that peer pressure is a constant battle. Perhaps you have a teenager that would benefit from learning how to tolerate the stressors of homework, exams, and extracurricular activities.

If so, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training can provide effective strategies to help address these issues and more.

DBT OVERVIEW

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment developed by University of Washington's Marsha Linehan. DBT was derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat individuals that have high emotion dysregulation and impulsivity issues. Research has shown that individuals experiencing suicidality, anxiety, depression, and trauma benefit from Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

DBT skills groups focus on increasing individual's abilities through the enhancement of behavioral skills. The four main components are:

  • Mindfulness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

This group will focus on development of skills to broaden our viewpoints, to expand our ability to be present in the moment while increasing attention span and focus, to learn how to understand and control our feelings in difficult situations, to develop crisis survival skills, and to get along better with others and communicate more effectively.

IMPORTANT NOTE*

It is encouraged that each participant have access to an individual therapist to help process anything that may come up in the DBT skills group. If a client is experiencing active suicidal thoughts, has recently engaged in self-harming behaviors, or has recently attempted suicide, it is required that they meet with an individual therapist in order to be applicable for this skills group.  This group focuses solely on psychoeducation and skill building not emotional processing, however it is possible that skill building can prompt an emotional response that would require individual therapeutic support.
